Civic Address Signs
The Windsor Fire
Department in conjunction with the Lions Club are offering to assist you
in meeting the Provincial Guidelines for posting of Civic House Numbers.
It is critical that each house have the civic number posted clearly for
emergency vehicles to locate your house. Put yourself in the shoes of the
emergency responders driving along the road at night trying to see the number
on your house. Time can be the difference between life and death. The signs
that we offer are aluminum with four inch white 3M highly reflective numbers
on a five inch high 3M blue reflective background. This combination makes
the sign highly visible and conforms to road sign standards used in Nova
Scotia. If your house is within 50 feet and in clear view of the road, placing
a single sign next to the most visible door is acceptable. Civic numbers
displayed using these signs are quickly recognized by the emergency personal
when placed
facing the road so that the headlights of emergency vehicles driving past
your house on the main roadway will directly illuminate your sign. Emergency vehicles could
be arriving from either direction so it is important to use a double sided
sign or a separate sign in each direction. For this reason we request
that civic numbers be placed next to the road
on the left side of your driveway looking from the road. The sign should
be 48" off the ground and back from the road enough that it will not
be covered or damaged by snow plowing.
